Frequently Asked DevOps Questions and Answers

Q: Will this require changes to how we work together?
A: The transition to DevOps will primarily affect our internal processes. You will see improvements in            speed and transparency but no additional effort required on your part unless you decide to adopt                DevOps for your own internal system administration (more details below).

Q: Is DevOps Center secure?
A: Yes, DevOps Center is a managed package provided by Salesforce and follows Salesforce’s robust security and compliance standards.

Q: Can our team use DevOps Center too?
A: Absolutely. DevOps Center can be accessed by system administrators. To ensure transparency and collaboration across your team and ours, we highly recommend you begin using DevOpps as well to avoid overwriting deployments, working directly in production, sandbox mismatches, etc. This has an added benefit by cultivating a comprehensive change control log you can reference later.

Q: How can I receive enablement for my admin or team?
A: We’re happy to provide guidance and enablement sessions to help your team understand how DevOps works. If you're interested in training, let us know, and we can schedule a session tailored to your team’s needs.

Q: Can we review and approve deployments before they are made?
A: Yes, we can create a ‘bundle’ of changes and provide it for your review prior deployment. This allows you to review and approve the changes at your convenience, ensuring they align with your organization’s needs and timeline. Additionally, we can set up an approval process as part of the deployment pipeline to give you more control and visibility before any changes go live.

Q: Where is the deployment history stored and will I have access to our deployment history?
A: You can view the Activity History for each work item, which provides a comprehensive history of all key events, including promotions, commits, work item status changes, warnings, and errors (failures).
This historical view enables you to maintain and view a record of events and associated details for auditing, troubleshooting, and general visibility purposes.

Q: What if I don’t want to use DevOps in my system?
A: We are happy to work with you on your terms. If DevOps is not the right fit for you at this time, we can continue deploying changes using our current tools. However, we recommend planning for a future transition, as change sets and similar tools lack the ease of use and transparency that DevOps provides.

Q:When should we expect to start seeing or using DevOps for ongoing support?
A: For Managed Services clients, we plan to roll out these updates in the first quarter of 2025. For our Fundamental Care clients, we will reach out soon to discuss whether this approach aligns with your organization’s needs.

Q: What is the setup time/effort to enable DevOps?
A: We estimate that setting up DevOps will take approximately [‘x’ number of hours]. To ensure this effort delivers the maximum impact for your organization, we’ll work closely with you to align the setup process with your capacity and priorities. For Fundamental Care clients especially, we will want to weigh the impact to effort.

We are confident that adopting Salesforce DevOps will bring tangible benefits to your organization, and we’re excited to partner with you on this next step in our journey together. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Q: Can I use Partial Copy or Full sandboxes as my source environment for changes when using DevOps?
No, Partial Copy and Full sandboxes cannot be used as the source environment because Source Tracking cannot be enabled for them. Instead, you'll need to use a Developer or Developer Pro sandbox  as your source. You'll need to establish a Dev -> Full -> Prod pipeline for proper source tracking and deployment.

Q: Can Partial Copy or Full sandboxes still be part of my pipeline?
Yes, Partial Copy and Full sandboxes can still be part of your pipeline, but they cannot serve as the original source.
