Actions allow you to make charts inside dashboards or other sheets be interactive by using a common field.
Types of Actions
1. Filter: Use the data from one view to filter data in another to help guide analysis.
2. Highlight: Call attention to marks of interest by coloring specific marks and dimming all others.
3. Go to URL: Create hyperlinks to external resources, such as a web page, file, or another Tableau worksheet.
4. Go to Sheet: Simplify navigation to other worksheets, dashboards, or stories.
5. Change Parameter: Let users change parameter values by directly interacting with marks on a viz.
6. Change Set Values: Let users change the values in a set by directly interacting with marks on a viz.
Creating the Action
1. On a Dashboard, select a sheet.
2. On the top, click ‘Worksheet’ and then select ‘Actions’.
3. Click ‘Add Action’ and select the desired action.
4. Name the filter.
5. Source sheet: select the sheet(s) the action comes from.
6. Target sheet: select the sheet(s) the action performs on.
7. Run Action: Select the type of movement that activates the action.
a. Hover: by hovering over the Source Sheet will act on the Target Sheet.
b. Select: by selecting the Source Sheet will act on the Target Sheet.
c. Menu: by selecting the Source Sheet action will appear in Tooltip.
8. Clearing the selection will:
a. Leave the filter: the filter will have to be removed by clicking right and selecting ‘Remove Filter’ on the Source Sheet.
b. Show all Values: Allows you to click on multiple parts of the Source Sheet and a new filter will show.
c. Exclude all values: By clicking on a value in the Source Sheet will exclude all other values in the view.
9. Target Filters: Choose the field that connects the Source and Target Sheets together.
10. Click on ‘Select Fields’, and ‘Add Filter…’ and choose the correct connecting field.
11. Click ‘Ok’ to add the field to the filter.
12. Click ‘Ok’ to create action.
